The EastMed pipeline – Israel to the rescue for Europe’s energy transformation?

To be able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions the EU has set itself the goal of increasing the share of renewable energies. To achieve this, however, the current energy infrastructure which relies mainly on the import of fossil fuels must be modernized and expanded.

While such a transition is challenging, it could also reduce dependencies on countries like Russia and reduce price fluctuations. This paper explains the current situation of the energy supply in Europe in detail and describes which opportunities and challenges need to be faced with a focus on how a cooperation between Israel and Europe through the EastMed pipeline could be part of a new approach.
