Launching of the book: Solidarity requires action - Israeli civil society after the massacre of October 7, 2023

The resilience and strength of the Israeli civil society are the focus of Anita Haviv's new book, "Solidarity requires action: Israeli civil society after the massacre of October 7, 2023." Through 17 interviews with members of different groups in Israeli society, she succeeded in showing the image of a society that was united at the most difficult moment. Israelis from all different walks of life, ethnic, and religious backgrounds stood together in the wake of the October 7 terror attacks.

We at the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Israel were delighted to host a presentation of the book in our office in Ramat Gan on November 11, 2024. Two extraordinary representatives of Israeli civil society and interviewees from the book talked about their projects.

Yaniv Heygyi, the former secretary general of Kibbutz Be’eri, one of the hardest hit localities of the Gaza Envelope, gave an account of his experiences on October 7 and how, in the months of evacuation that followed, he developed the idea for a digital memorial to commemorate the terror of October 7.

Chana Irom, who founded the initiative “Iron Sisters," a project where women from the ultra-Orthodox community volunteer to help in various ways, talked about the role that the ultra-Orthodox community can play in Israeli society and how her project is building bridges between different between her own community and other communities in Israel.
