International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2026 | The Landsberg Community: A Microhistory of German Jewry under National Socialism

Marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day, this two-part online Talking Memory series in collaboration between the Ghetto Fighters’ House and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung traces the Jewish history of Landsberg from community to catastrophe, and from displacement to renewal.

Through microhistory, testimony, scholarship, archival memory, music, and personal reflection, the programs examine Jewish life under National Socialism and the aftermath of liberation, when survivors rebuilt communal, cultural, and political life in the Landsberg DP camp.

By focusing on individual lives and local experiences, the series illuminates both the destruction of German Jewry and the enduring human capacity for agency, solidarity, and renewal. Together, the programs frame remembrance not only as commemoration of loss, but as an ethical act of witnessing, responsibility, and resistance in the present.
