FES Israel Joins the Berl Katznelson Foundation at its Annual Conference

Bringing together politicians, activists, academics, journalists, and civil society actors, the conference served as an important platform for discussing the future of democratic and progressive politics in Israel at a particularly challenging moment for the country.

The conference opened with a keynote speech by Yair Golan, leader of The Democrats Party Israel, who addressed the political and social challenges currently facing Israeli society and emphasized the importance of democratic resilience, civic engagement, and rebuilding public trust.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in a wide range of discussions on some of the most pressing issues shaping Israel’s future. Panels focused on the ongoing crisis in the education system, questions of social solidarity and democratic renewal, the importance of an Israeli-Palestinian dialogue and shared society, as well as the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Kibbutz Nir Oz following the massacre of October 7.

FES Israel was pleased to contribute to the conference by inviting Dylan Boutiflat, International Secretary of the French Socialist Party, for a discussion with Yonathan Levy. Their conversation explored shared political struggles across Europe and Israel, the rise of populism and polarization, and the role of progressive movements in defending democracy and promoting social justice in an increasingly uncertain global environment.

The conference highlighted the importance of international dialogue, democratic cooperation, and progressive partnerships in addressing today’s political and social challenges.
