Expanding Housing Assistance Mechanisms for Women Victims of Violence and Their Children

For women and children who are in the cycle of violence, the difficulty of obtaining a safe roof is a major barrier against leaving violent relationships.

The lack of available, decent and affordable housing forces many women to face an impossible choice for them and their children: whether to remain in the cycle of violence or remain homeless.

In the absence of a policy that would create alternatives and answers from the housing sector for these women and for their children, many women are forced to continue living in a house that has become dangerous.

This publication constitutes a position paper in preparation for a further discussion in the Committee for the Advancement of the Status of Women on the subject: housing assistance for women leaving shelters and victims of domestic violence.
